How to price items for a garage or yard sale

One of the questions that I get asked the most is how to price items for a garage or yard sale.

The answer to this garage sale pricing question lies in you objective with your garage sale.

People generally have one of two reasons for wanting to hold a garage sale. Mostly, people are moving, having a spring clean or just generally want to clear out some “junk”. Other times people actually want or need to make some money at a garage sale.

The average garage sale takings are only $400, while the garage sale pro’s make AT LEAST $1,000 per sale and often much more. One of the biggest reasons for this difference is due to how they price their garage or yard sale merchandise.

So firstly decide what your objectives are and how important the money is to you. If all you want to do is clear out the junk, then quite honestly the price that you charge for your garage or yard sale merchandise REALLY DOES NOT MATTER. Your main objective is not to be stuck with anything at the end of the sale!

If this is the case, ask yourself what you would be prepared to pay for any given item and then price your items at that price OR LOWER. Pretty simple. I am just trying to make your life easy here because so many people get stuck at the point of garage sale pricing that they never get their garage sale off the ground. Read on though, as I am still going to give you some guidelines that will help.

If you are in it for the money, your objective is to charge AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN, while still ensuring that you sell everything. If you are running regular garage sales, then it is not really a problem if you do not sell an item because you can just try again at your next sale. You can afford to be very aggressive with your pricing because you can reduce your price at the next sale if the item did not sell. If it is a one off sale, you will have to be a bit more careful.
