What to sell at a garage sale

This has to be one of the most fascinating things about the human psyche. You are probably asking yourself what sort of products one can sell on a garage or yard sale. The answer is ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING! Please read that again, I said absolutely anything! You will be amazed at the stuff that people will buy. I know that some of you are not going to believe me right now. Just do me one favour and try it.

What I am getting at is that we all tend to have our own personal prejudices about what we think will sell and what we think will not. I remember buying some old LPs at an auction during the very early days of our flea market career. My younger brother absolutely refused to “put that sh%$#t in his booth”. Because I was financing the operation, I got my way and eventually we ditched everything else except the LP’s!

We used to buy up parcels. So we would not cherry pick the items, we would undertake to buy everything that the person had but we would obviously pay a very low amount per unit. Now some stuff we could mark-up quite well (we used 400%) and they would sell quickly and we would often be able to get our money back in just one weekend of flea market trading. There was however a brand of LP that we just could not “give away” at the regular market that we traded at. It was called “Springbok hits” and it was just a compilation of all of the popular songs of the day. Then one day we went to a market at the local station where our clientele was very different. If I did not see it with my own eyes, I would not have believed it but the customers actually got into a fist fight with one another because they wanted those Springbok hits so badly.

The point of this story is that you must never let your personal tastes get in the way of your business. If you remember nothing else from this post, remember this. PEOPLE WILL BUY ANYTHING AT THE RIGHT PRICE.

No matter what it is that you have to sell, somebody will eventually buy it. That is not to say that you should pay any price for it, but often in this type of business you will end up buying a whole parcel of stuff. When looking at things that you think will never sell, you will be pleasantly surprised at the fact that you can squeeze a few extra dollars out of the “rubbish”.

It is important to have a variety of goods for sale, especially if you do regular garage sales. You may also want to specialise in certain things, like say books or clothes.
